Overview
At OBS Engineering, we believe in building a workplace where innovation thrives, and security is non-negotiable. As part of our commitment to excellence, we empower individuals with opportunities to not only develop cutting-edge solutions but to do so in a secure, reliable, and ethically-driven environment.
Our OBS Research Cloud is a testament to that vision — a private, scalable cloud infrastructure designed specifically to meet the unique demands of academic research and high-performance computing (HPC). Built for global scalability, this infrastructure offers the flexibility of cloud computing while maintaining the control, security, and customization that only private cloud environments can provide.
The OBS Research Cloud facilitates complex computational tasks, data-intensive research, and collaboration between academic institutions, all while protecting sensitive data and intellectual property. This environment is optimized for secure, high-throughput workloads and is critical to fostering breakthrough research across disciplines. We are looking for an Applied Cloud Security Engineer to manage the security of this vital ecosystem, ensuring that our network of cloud infrastructure maintains the highest standards of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Reports to the Head of OBS Engineering.
Responsibilities
Cloud Security Architecture & Design: Design and develop robust security architectures for the OBS Research Cloud, implementing scalable security solutions tailored to HPC environments and private cloud infrastructures.
Threat & Vulnerability Management: Conduct proactive threat hunting, risk assessments, vulnerability assessments, and penetration tests to identify security gaps. Implement patches and mitigation measures to protect sensitive research data.
Security Automation: Build and deploy automated security tools and frameworks, leveraging infrastructure-as-code (IaC) methodologies to ensure continuous compliance and protection in containerized and virtualized environments.
Data Integrity & Confidentiality: Establish and maintain encryption standards (in transit and at rest) and identity and access management (IAM) solutions, ensuring that all research data complies with institutional, legal, and international security regulations.
Incident Response & Forensics: Develop and manage incident response plans, including detection, investigation, and resolution of security breaches. Conduct root-cause analyses and forensics when necessary.
Compliance & Auditing: Ensure adherence to global standards (NIST, ISO 27001, SOC 2) and data privacy regulations (GDPR, HIPAA). Lead internal and external security audits, providing necessary documentation and implementing improvements as identified.
Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams (DevOps, infrastructure, academic partners) to align security objectives with operational performance, ensuring a balance between security, agility, and computational efficiency.
Security Awareness: Promote a culture of security by conducting regular training sessions, workshops, and awareness campaigns for researchers, engineers, and all stakeholders working within OBS Research Cloud.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or related fields.
1.5+ years of experience in cloud security or equivalent hands-on experience in security roles, particularly within private cloud environments.
Strong proficiency with cloud security frameworks and services (AWS, Azure, GCP) and security tools (IDS/IPS, firewalls, SIEM).
Expertise in network security, encryption protocols, VPNs, firewalls, and IAM solutions.
Solid understanding of HPC security challenges and security practices in academic research environments.
Experience with scripting and automation tools (Python, PowerShell, Terraform) to streamline security processes.
Strong knowledge of compliance frameworks (NIST, ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA).
Preferred Qualifications:
Certifications such as AWS Certified Security, Certified Cloud Security Professional (CCSP), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or equivalent certifications.
Experience with container security (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices security frameworks.
Understanding of AI and machine learning model security and privacy considerations in HPC environments.
Knowledge of data integrity issues specific to academic research projects, including data reproducibility and versioning requirements.
Prior experience working with zero-trust architectures and policy-driven security models.
Special Domain Requirements
Security Background Check: All candidates must undergo a thorough background check, including criminal history, cybersecurity assessments, and industry-related clearance checks, to ensure suitability for working with sensitive academic and research data.
Security Clearance: The ability to acquire and maintain appropriate levels of security clearance is essential, as the role may involve working on confidential or classified research projects.
